Fake and originalUsually it is not difficult to recognize the fake (upper picture)from original Dupont.Words LAQUE DE CHINE are quite misleading on the lighter that is all made of metal. The quality and readability of the square mark and all the text is incomparable. The serial number, - each letter and number of the original is printed separately, hence the distance from the lower edge and the position of each letter and number is a bit different, also the distances between the letters and numbers are different. DupontSimon Tissot - Dupont’s company founded in 1872 was making luxury leather goods. First petrol lighters were made in early 30s.In war times, when quality material was hard to achieve, Dupont lighters were made of aluminium, the company quickly returned to high quality materials after the war, great series of petrol lighters were made from that time untill mid 50s and there were Dupont petrol lighters produced even later. The first gas lighter made by ST Dupont was introduced in 1953 under D57 code mark, when the roller was turned the nozzle jumped up and the gas automatically begun to flow, closed lid pushed the nozzle back to the position. Petrol model of the same size and look had been produced in the same time. The next gas Dupont marked BS (Briquet Simple) following in 1959 was a bit wider than D57. The production of Dupont BS ended in early 70s but authorized Dupont service will accept it for repair even today.

The size of this dependable model was the same as of today’s Line 1 Dupont lighters. In 1965 Dupont’s most successful lighter was introduced, it was marked BR (Briquet Reglable). The lighter had adjustable flame and automatic stop of the gas flow during the flint change. Today’s Line 1 lighters don’t have this function anymore.Beside Line 1 also Line 2, Line D and Gatsby series are beeing produced. Dupont table lighters and rare collectable limited series like “Art Nouveau” or “ Maharadjah” are available too.

It's hard to tell the age exactly, only ST Dupont themselves might have some sort of serial number registry, but they're not very responsive to most inquiries. You can tell from the flame height adjuster that it's a newer ligne 1, and not the older style. That said, it has to be made after 1965. The design looks a bit dated, and that said it's probably no newer than the 80s. So probably somewhere between 65 and 1985 would be my guess. It's definitely repairable. The newer style ligne 1's all are. Whether you could repair it yourself or not all depends on your skill level and what is wrong. It probably needs all the seals/gaskets replaced at the very least.

You'll probably have to take it apart to even have a better idea of what's actually wrong. Generally most authorized ST Dupont repair places will probably charge you $60-90 to fix it, but in my experience most can be fixed if you're willing to spend the money. I will try to contact Dupont once more and see if they have this registry.I live in the Netherlands and the nearest official repair centre is in Belgium, at Dupont themselves. And they are not veryresponsive indeed.

All the local stores also keep refering me to Dupont, not very helpful.Anyway I'm going to take the lighter apart and see if i can find anything wrong in there by myself. If not I will try to find someone at Dupont's who DOES speak proper English or Dutch. I am definitely willing to spend the money because it was my grandfathers lighter.I'll get back on this and thanks for the help!
